Say what you mean and mean what you say

I was invited to pitch to a big corporation.
It was really hot out, but I didn’t want to lug everything with me. I left my water bottle in the car.

ESG

You should know that this corporation is very clear about how important ESG is to them.

Just in case you’re not familiar with ESG, it stands for Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance.

It’s a way to measure how responsibly and sustainably a company operates, going beyond just profits to look at its impact on the planet, people, and its own leadership.

Reliability

Leading up to this meeting, I’d been instructed by some of the best on what corporates are looking for in their suppliers. I knew how important ESG was for this company, and to address it in my pitch.

Transparency

Back to the story.
A lovely receptionist invited me to cool my heels in the waiting area until the hosts had finished their current meeting. She offered me water. I gratefully accepted. Then, I went to look for the recycling bin and couldn’t find it.

Wouldn’t cha know it.

I went back to the desk and asked where the recycling was.
She told me they didn’t have one. She offered to take my empty bottle.
I thanked her.

It reminded me of a high school teacher who deducted points for submitting assignments after the due date, but never got around to grading them or returning them….
