What is your event REALLY about?
Traditions! What are yours?
I don’t know about you, but when I throw a party, or have an event, it’s about sharing what I love and showing my guests how much they mean to me. Making them happy makes me happy.
You know how traditions start, right? Somebody does something, and then, for whatever reason, another person does it, and then it starts taking on momentum.
Before you know it, the “Roast Syndrome” sets in.
What’s the “Roast Syndrome”?
A boy was helping with the cooking for the holiday meal. He watched his Dad cut off a good 2” chunk off of the roast and put it aside.
“Why did you do that?” the boy asked, puzzled. “Well, that’s how Grandma always did it,” his Dad answered said. “But why did SHE do it?,” the boy asked. “That’s a great question! Let me give her a call right now and find out why.” So the man called his Mom.
His Mom answered that she did it because her roasting pan was very small so it could fit in the tiny oven they had in their first home. Otherwise, the roast didn’t fit!
Lesson learned. Nowadays I need to know why it’s a tradition.
Your Traditions
Sometimes it’s what we eat–for example, what is the dish that your family traditionally eats to bring luck for the New Year? Ours was stuffed cabbage, here in the U.S. South, Hoppin’ John is a thing,
Soba Noodles are ‘it’ in Japan, and carp or other fish in many countries.
Some traditions are all about the kind of clothing you wear (or don’t wear, for that matter!) for special celebrations.
Maybe it’s the way you were taught to speak to your elders, a special way to address them to show your respect. For example, ‘Ma’am’ and ‘Sir’ in the Southeastern U.S. are ostensibly an indication that you come from a good family.
Some of the ways we’ve incorporated our clients’ traditions into their events is by taking a good, thorough look at what matters to you and your people. Sometimes it’s all about making every. single. element. unique. We can do that. It might be about giving your guests a special message, like when Cirque du Soleil hired us give their VIP opening night guests Lip Print Analysis and add a brief message that they would “find the rest of their destiny under the Big Top!”
There are so many beautiful touches you can add to your event to make it about YOU. How about sharing fortune cookies that not only give your guests the fortune you chose for them, but also thank them for coming?!
