The writing’s on the Wall…
Writing Our Stories
We are writing our stories with every decision, and every move we make. Every time we walk out our doors, we are either creating our story, or we are being put into somebody else’s story. Remember the saying, ‘keeping up with the Joneses?’ Take it a step further–we are becoming the Joneses.
Messy Lives, Hopes & Dreams
We toddle through our messy lives with occasional flashes of grandeur. In the olden days, falling in line with how things were done was easy. You were born in a certain place at a certain time, and what you got was what you got. What does that mean? It means that we now have unparalleled access to information, much greater social mobility, and along with access and mobility, we have bigger hopes and dreams.
The ‘Right’ Way
We find instructions on the ‘right’ way to do things everywhere –“The 10 BEST places to have your wedding” or “The 22 Event Trends that are EVERYWHERE this Spring!” Don’t get me wrong, I love this stuff as much as anybody. It’s comforting, relaxing, like a soak in a hot tub and some ice-cream.
We all want The Best. Whether we are looking for an insurance company (don’t get me started), a caterer, veterinarian, or venue, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by choices. Easy to develop a severe case of Decision Paralysis. What do we do then? We blow it off! We wait. Hem and haw. Then, when the stakes start getting a little too high for comfort, we pounce. Maybe we have NO CLUE what the descriptions of the things we are purchasing even mean. We’re scared of looking stupid and so we look around to see what other people are doing. Baddaboom! Aha — and then, “I’ll have what they’re having!” Problem solved. Or is it?
This is how we end up being the ‘Jonses.’ This is what the big movie studios of the 80’s did, churning out one blockbuster after the other until barely anybody even remembered what an independent film was. Studios focused on recreating their most successful projects by whittling down their rosters of writers, actors, and directors, production by production. This is what Broadway, restaurant chains, and big box retailers do, as well.
Do you want to be a Super Store? I sure don’t. I don’t want to beat down suppliers’ prices to the point where it becomes a race to the bottom. Nope, don’t want to “‘”Book ’em and cook ’em,” as I’ve heard it called.
One way to do things Is to create a simple, replicable product, a reasonably priced item and make it available to anybody. Like an event at a venue where all you have to do is bring your people. They have the food, furnishings, and fun, all-inclusive, everything is preselected and easy.
What if you take that little dirt path into the wilderness of what you’re really trying to say, or what your client needs and wants?
Talk to us. Make your event about you and your people. Get them to remember your event and you for all the right reasons. As they say, “Be yourself–everyone else is taken.”
